Local spots that will transport you to a holiday destination!

by Mitchells

Want to feel like you’re on holiday without the stress and cost of going abroad? With quaint seaside towns, sandy beaches and historic coastlines, Dorset has everything you need for a memorable summer getaway with the family.

We’ve compiled a list of local spots in Dorset that will give you that holiday feeling, without having to get on a plane!

Durdle Door,
Lulworth

Durdle Door is one of Dorset’s most photographed and iconic landmarks, and for good reason! This picturesque Jurassic Coast World Heritage Site is located on the Lulworth Estate in south Dorset and was naturally formed over 10,000 years ago.

The magnificent natural limestone arch was formed when the power of the waves eroded the rock and forged a hole through the middle. The name Durdle is derived from an old English word ‘thirl’, which means to pierce, bore or drill.

Spend the day admiring the natural beauty around the Lulworth Estate and stop to have a sunny picnic on Durdle Door Beach!

Blue Pool,
Wareham

This hidden treasure is nestled within the Furzebrook Estate in the beautiful Isle of Purbeck, just by Corfe Castle.

Once a clay pit, Blue Pool Lake is now a mesmerising spectacle of ever-changing hues from vibrant greens to tranquil turquoises.

Take a leisurely walk with the family amongst the trees and wildlife and experience the serene ambience of Blue Pool, stop off at the adventure play park, and even spot a few gnomes and fairy doors on your way!

Kimmeridge Bay,
Isle of Purbeck

Kimmeridge Bay lies within the Purbeck Coast Marine Conservation Zone and has been recognised for its exceptional marine life. There are plenty of interesting things to look at and explore along the shoreline and is known for the best rock-pooling and snorkelling in Dorset! The Bay is also popular in the summertime for kayaking, surfing and windsurfing.

Recently featured on the new BBC documentary featuring David Attenborough, Kimmeridge Bay is famous for its fossils. The ‘Giant Sea Monster’ fossil discovered in the cliffs is now exhibited in the Etches Collection Museum of Jurassic Marine Life in Kimmeridge village!

Lyme Regis,
West Dorset

The scenic seaside resort of Lyme Regis is a great destination for a little summer break by the sea with the family. With breathtaking scenery, beautiful beaches and rich local history, there are plenty of activities to keep the whole family entertained.

Nicknamed ‘the pearl of Dorset’, Lyme Regis is the perfect spot for a few days away to recharge. Take a long walk along the South West Coast path, have a go at sailing or fishing, or simply spend a relaxing day down at the beach.

Old Harry Rocks,
Isle of Purbeck

Standing tall on Hand Point at the end of Studland Bay are natural brilliant chalk-white formations, known as Old Harry Rocks. The name ‘Old Harry’ refers to the single stack of chalk standing furthest out to sea. Until 1896 there was another stack known as Old Harry’s Wife, but erosion caused her to tumble into the sea, leaving just a stump.

Part of the South West Coast path, Old Harry is a beautiful place to walk, cycle and enjoy a picnic with the family. Admire the incredible sea views and summer sunshine!

Brownsea Island,
Poole Harbour

Found inside Poole Harbour and accessible via boat from either Sandbanks or Poole Quay, Brownsea Island is a National Trust nature reserve and wildlife sanctuary. With a variety of natural habitats, including woodland, heathland and a lagoon, the island is a haven for wildlife, such as the rare endangered red squirrel and a huge variety of birds, even peacocks!

Enjoy a picnic or pop into the café for lunch, surrounded by the wildlife and dramatic views of the Purbeck Hills. Take part in one of the free nature trails and visit the adventure nature play park to keep the kids entertained.

You can even camp on the island! Pitch your tent by the water’s edge and enjoy a night under the stars surrounded by nature.

Swanage,
South East Dorset

The iconic coastal town of Swanage is perfect for a seaside summer getaway. With award-winning sandy beaches, independent boutique shops and year-round events and festivals, it’s one of the best spots on Dorset’s coastline.

Perfect for families, Swanage has a pool of activities for all ages, including its magnificent heritage pier, stream railway and clifftop castle. It’s also a great place for water sports like diving, kayaking and fishing, and has many trails for relaxing walks along the coastline.
